Every Coastside Homeowner Should Have An Emergency Ready Kit And Here Is Why

by Kathy and Michael Rain - The Rain Team

Living along the coastside is the perfect place to call home, but we are at risk for emergencies just like many other places across the nation.  From earthquakes, floods, and fires to severe storms -  being prepared for these emergencies is a must for any homeowner. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) recommends that everyone be ready for an emergency by having basic supplies in your home to allow you to survive for a minimum three days if there were to be an emergency.

On average it can take 72 hours for local authorities or relief workers to be on the scene after an emergency, which is why three days of supplies is recommended.

Here are a few essentials to purchase and have on hand in case of an emergency.

  • Flashlight and extra batteries

  • A first aid kit

  • At least one gallon of water per person in your home per day for three days

  • Pliers or a wrench to turn off utilities

  • Emergency blanket

  • A whistle you can use to signal for help if needed

  • Matches stored in a waterproof container

  • Fire Extinguisher

Additional emergency items recommended to be on hand can be found in this downloadable form here from FEMA. If you are wondering what essential items should be in your first aid kits for an emergency the American Red Cross has provided a list here.

Assemble your kit now so you are prepared for any emergency that could occur. Unfortunately, there may be a time when you may  have to evacuate your coastside home in a moment’s notice and having essentials on hand ready to take with you could save your life.

As a homeowner take measures to keep everyone safe. If you have decided it’s your time to buy or sell a coastside home, our goal is to guide you through the process from the beginning to the purchase of your new home and beyond. Contact us today via email or give us a call at (650) 888-6903.
