Coastside Homeowners Halloween Safety Tips

by Kathy and Michael Rain - The Rain Team

It’s that spooky time of year once again and we know it’s not only the kids that look forward to the fun and festivities that come with Halloween.  This fun holiday can quickly be ruined if you’re not careful and provide a safe coastside home.

Here are list of some safety tips to have a safe and fun Halloween at your coastside home.

Keep It Well Lit - To make sure all trick-or-treaters can see easily when they are on your property keep the lights on inside and out. This will prevent any falls or trips from happening.

No Flames - Lit candles and luminaries help create a spooky feel, but can be dangerous if tipped over. Year after year fires occur when an eager trick-or-treater accidently knocks over a lighted flame.  Instead use LED lights or battery powered lanterns.

Clear Path - Prior to Halloween look for and remove any large pieces of debris that may be obstructing the path to your home from your driveway. This will prevent visitors from stumbling and hurting themselves.

Keep Pets Inside - Don’t forget about your pets this Halloween. They can become easily frightened. Protect them by keeping them inside and in place where they cannot easily run out the door.

As a homeowner take measures to keep everyone safe who visits your coastside home on Halloween.  If you have decided it’s your time to buy or sell a coastside home, our goal is to guide you through the process from the beginning to the purchase of your new home and beyond. Coastside Housing Market Forecast for 2016

by Kathy and Michael Rain - The Rain Team

2016 may seem far off, but it will be here before we know it.  Earlier this month at the California Realtor Expo held in San Jose, the California Association of Realtors (C.A.R) released their 2016 forecast for the housing market in California.

The C.A.R. is predicting that we will see an increase in the number of existing home sales in 2016 by 6.3 percent to reach a total of 433,000 units. This is higher than what was forecasted for 2015. “Solid job growth and favorable interest rates will drive a strong demand for housing next year,” said C.A.R. President, Chris Kutzkey. The C.A.R forecast for 2016 is predicting that we will see Gross Domestic Product in the U.S. increase by 2.7 percent, following the projected gain of 2.4 percent in 2015. California’s unemployment rate is forecasted to decrease to 5.5 percent next year, down from 6.3 percent we have seen this year.

A strengthening job market and historically low mortgage interest rates make for strong indicators of a strong Coastside housing market in 2016. Across the state the median home price is expected to increase by 3.2 percent.

“The foundation for California’s housing market remains strong, with moderating home prices, signs of credit easing, and the state continuing to lead the nation in economic and job growth,” said C.A.R. Vice President.

4 Fall Home Maintenance Tips to Prepare Your Coastside Home for El Ñino

by Kathy and Michael Rain - The Rain Team

Fall is officially here and now is the time to start thinking about preparing your California coastside home for the El Nino winter ahead with these fall home maintenance tips.

  1. Smoke Detectors - It is proven that smoke detectors save lives, yet so many of us forget about this life saving device. Change those batteries. Make it a routine to change the batteries in your home’s smoke detector every spring and fall.
  2. Gutter Maintenance - As we all know, rain has been scarce here in San Mateo and across the rest of California. However, with an El Ñino winter to prepare for, check and clear your gutters and downspouts of all debris.  You may need to use a plumber’s or electrician’s snake to clean out that hard to reach debris or obstructions in your downspout. Proper upkeep of your gutters and downspouts will save you money on repair costs.
  3. Roof Integrity - Fall is also the perfect time to inspect your roof’s integrity. Using a ladder inspect your roof for any missing or damaged shingles, warped flashing, and any other problems that may result in your roof leaking. Also, check for pests as they can weaken the integrity of your roof. Termites are notorious for this. Call a local pest control expert if you are not trained in spotting termites.
  4. Inspect Your Decks - If indeed we do experience an El Ñino winter here along the coast, you want your deck to be ready. A deck can be very expensive to replace. Inspect it now for any cracks, exposed metals, bubbles in the finish, and exposed nail holes.

Preparing your home for the winter ahead can save you money and headache down the road.  We may not experience the deep freezes other areas of the country have but there are still things we should do to prepare our home for winter.

This Columbus Day weekend enjoy the Italian American Parade in San Francisco which has been an annual event since 1868.  The parade is Sunday, October 11, at 12:30pm and will start at the corner of Jefferson and Stockton Streets. The celebration continues after the parade with a wide variety of food and wine specials at many of the restaurants along the parade route, and entertainment by traditional Italian musicians.
