Composting Basics for Coastside Residents

by Kathy and Michael Rain - The Rain Team

25% of food is thrown out in the average American household, which could easily be turned into compost.  Composting is a great addition to the soil of any garden or yard.  It will benefit your garden by improving the soil and helping to prevent plant diseases.  The process of composting is mixing yard and household organic waste in a container that provides it with conditions that allow for decomposition.

To start composting, you first should choose the right container.  Look for a container made of wood, metal or plastic that can accommodate up to 80 gallons.  Next, place the container in a shady area of your coastside home yard. Here are a few suggestions to add to your compost pile: fruit peels, eggshells, left over vegetables, coffee grounds, and paper filters. You do not want to compost any meat, dairy, cooking oil or fish as they will draw unwanted animals and insects.

The majority of your compost should be made up of dry organic matter such as old newspapers, leaves, twigs, grass clippings, and even your old paper plates. The best results of composting come from a three-to-one ratio of dry organic matter to wet.  You can check the moisture level of the compost by grabbing a handful and checking to see that it has the consistency of a wrung-out sponge. If you find that your compost is too dry then let some rain water in to even out the moisture levels.  If you notice your compost is putting off a bad smell add more dry items to it.

It can take from a few months to a year for your compost to be ready.  You want your compost to look and smell similar to that of dark soil.  Once your compost is ready place it on your lawn or garden.

Housing Inventory Remains Decreased in San Mateo While Baby Boomers Stay in Their Homes Longer

by Kathy and Michael Rain - The Rain Team
p>The number of inventory homes available for San Mateo County home buyers continues to remain low. Lawrence Yun, NAR chief economist, recently stated that, “Total inventory fell in December for the first time in 16 months, resulting in fewer choices for buyers and a modest uptick in price growth in markets throughout the country,” he said. “With interest rates at lows not seen since early 2013, the strength in existing-sales in upcoming months will largely depend on the willingness of current homeowners to realize their equity gains from the past couple years and trade up.”

In San Mateo County for the month of December the median home price was $980,000, and the unsold inventory index was at 1.1, according to recent data from the California Association of Realtors. The median home sale price across the state of California was $439,000 in December. There were 25 new single-family housing permits granted.

Recent data shows that baby boomers are choosing to stay in their homes longer than any other generation and 78% of those say that they are likely to sell their home, but 54% are worried that they have not saved enough money to retire comfortably. When it comes to future plans only 4.7% of home owners in this generation plan to downsize.

Hiking

A new year can crowd the gym. Avoid the crowds by taking a hike outside. The California Coastal Trail System opened a new trail segment recently in Half Moon Bay which is a perfect place to enjoy hiking.

Rock-Climbing

Another great workout is rock-climbing.  It provides a full body workout and there is nothing like the sense of accomplishment you feel once you reach the top. There are many places in San Mateo County that offers indoor rock-climbing if you are not ready to try it outdoors.

Boot Camp

Consider boosting your workout this year by enlisting in a boot camp. These have been around for years and continue to be a popular choice. California offers plenty of great natural terrain that makes it the perfect place for boot camp classes.

Spinning

Spinning is increasing in popularity. More and more studios are offering the program.  The quick-paced class with blaring techno music is a great way to change up your usual routine.

Outside

Living on the coastside provides residents with an abundance of ways to get fit outdoors.  There is no need to pay for gym memberships or travel expenses. Simply get out and start exercising by walking or running in your area.  Devil’s Slide Coast trail is a great place to visit and you can learn more here.
