Money Saving Strategies Every Coastside Resident Should Take Advantage Of Each Month

by Kathy and Michael Rain - The Rain Team

If you are looking to stretch your monthly budget further and save money at the same time here are a few strategies you should adopt.

Utilities

Monthly utility bills can be a big expense for every coastside homeowner.  Reducing the amount of water and electricity you use each month can save you money.  Little things can help you reduce your usage, such as closing doors to spaces that do not need to be heated or cooled – like your closet.  Turning off lights when you leave a room can also save you money each month on your utility bills.

Upgrades

A few inexpensive home upgrades that you can do yourself could you save you money.  If your coastside home does not have a ceiling fan in your main rooms, then install them. This can reduce your air conditioning usage and reduce your monthly costs.  After your ceiling fans are installed try reversing their direction in the cooler months to help your space heat more efficiently. Another inexpensive upgrade is to replace your home’s light switches with dimmer switches.

Landscaping

Your home’s curb appeal should make a considerable first impression. Hiring a lawn company to maintain your lawn can be costly. If time allows do it yourself.  Set up a rainwater barrel and begin collecting rain water and use this to water your lawn. Not only are you helping the environment you are saving money as well.

Lists

It is easy to walk into a store to buy one thing and leave the store with a cart full of other items. Retailers are notorious for enticing us to buy more.  Prior to shopping make a list of what you need and stick to it when you go shopping. You will be surprised how much this can save you.

These are just a few ways you can start saving more money each month.  Small things can quickly add up.

Good Coastside Neighbors Have These Top Traits

by Kathy and Michael Rain - The Rain Team

No matter where you live along the coast there are small changes you can do that will impact your local community and being a good neighbor is one of them.   Here are a few of the top traits you can follow to be the best neighbor and strengthen your community.

  1. Relationships - Take the time to meet your neighbors and build a cordial relationship with them.  Good neighbors result in friendlier and safer communities while at the same time improving your own quality of life.

  2. Be active - Be active and do your part in helping to make your coastside community look its best by keeping your spaces clean and well maintained.  Don’t let your yard work fall behind.  Volunteer in local beach clean up days.

  3. Pay it forward - Do something nice for a neighbor and it will hopefully lead to them paying it forward to other neighbors.  Consider helping a neighbor with their yard work or letting them borrow one of your pieces of lawn equipment.

  4. Be Courteous - From time to time we all have people over to our coastside home to celebrate an occasion. The more people, the louder the noise can be. Be courteous when having guests over and don’t let the party get too loud and out of hand.  Consider inviting your neighbors to your get together as well.

  5. Respect - Be respectful of your neighbor’s property. If you have children, let them know your property’s boundary lines and ask them to respect the neighbors by not going into their space uninvited.

  6. Appreciation - Good costal neighbors take the time to appreciate all the coast offers each day. Take the time to stop and smell the roses and take in all the natural beauty that we are surrounded with by living along the coast.  It’s easy to be appreciative when we are surrounded by so much beauty.  Do your part to protect our natural beauty by helping to keep it clean.

Little acts of kindness throughout your community can build positive energy and encourage others to be good neighbors as well, making it a happier place to live.  Welcome new neighbors as they move in and greet others with a wave and friendly hello. You may have to step outside your comfort zone but the end result will be worth it.

Heart Attack Signs Every Coastside Woman Should Know

by Kathy and Michael Rain - The Rain Team

If you’re a woman living along the coastside do you know the warning signs of a heart attack? Last month was National Heart Month and the goal was to increase awareness about heart disease. Strokes and heart disease kill 1 in 3 women and it’s 80% preventable.

Heart attacks don’t just occur in the elderly. Knowing the signs of heart disease could save your life. The first sign of symptoms don’t always mimic those that we typically associate with heart attacks.  Along with the typical chest pain, many women also experience a lot of atypical signs. Some symptoms women have reported include heartburn, anxiety, and pain similar to arthritis. More serious vague symptoms are: lightheaded, cold sweats, nausea, pain in the arms, back, jaw, neck or stomach, and shortness of breath.

It is not uncommon for women to experience mild or less specific signs of heart attack then they are typically familiar with.  Many women tend to manage with symptoms longer than males, as they are usually in the role of caregiver and more concerned with others than themselves.

Don’t hesitate to seek treatment for fear that the symptoms are a false alarm and not truly your heart. Make yourself a priority and seek treatment if you experience symptoms no matter how vague they may be.

You can lower your risk for heart disease by being informed about signs and symptoms, visiting your primary physician routinely for wellness exams, exercising, and by eating a well-balanced diet.

How Staying Organized Saves You Money

by Kathy and Michael Rain - The Rain Team

It is all too common that a homeowner misplaces a bill or accidently throws it away only to receive a late charge. How often does your produce spoil before you get a chance to eat it? Have you found yourself buying a new pair of glasses because you can’t find yours?  You may not realize that all these little things are costing you money. And it is all from being unorganized.

A house that is cluttered can easily result in bills being missed, late fees racking up, and missed deadlines. These things can quickly impact your credit and future buying power - all a result of being unorganized.

If your home is disorganized you’re not alone. It has been reported that 43% of Americans suffer from their home being disorganized. The average American spends nearly 55 minutes a day looking for a misplaced item according to popular store IKEA’s “Life At Home Report.”

Taking the time to organize your coastside home has more benefits than just to be aesthetically appealing. It also provides financial savings.  Make it a goal to set aside a certain amount of time each week to go through your coastside home and purge, sort, assign, and categorize your belongings.

If you find yourself suffering from lost mail or papers, misplacing bills, or missing a tax deadline then your home office could use some organizing. Purchasing a wall-mounted mail organizer for bills is the first step in getting organized.  Not only does this allow all your bills to be in one place, it helps you be more productive with your time.

Consider placing shelves in your home office where you will put all important documents such as tax receipts, insurance policies, and your latest tax bill.

Beyond bills, you are losing money if your closets are not organized. Begin organizing crammed closets by removing everything and donating any items you have bought multiples of or items you will no longer wear. Next, create a better closet system by adding additional shelves or hanging rods.

Once your coastside home is organized you will quickly see the benefits. Avoiding late fees can easily boost your monthly budget.
