The 42nd Annual Safeway World Championship Pumpkin Weigh-Off will kick off October 12th in Half Moon Bay, with gourd growers from around the world gathering for the weigh-off. Organizers of the event will be awarding a $30,000 mega-prize for the pumpkin entered that breaks the world record. The current world record is 2,323 pounds set last year in Ludwigsburg, Germany, on October 12, 2014. Thousands of dollars in additional prizes will also be awarded during the weigh-off.  The winner of the event, along with the top five pumpkins will have the honor of being displayed at the Half Moon Bay Art & Pumpkin Festival, Oct. 17-18. The Safeway World Championship Pumpkin Weigh-Off will take place at I.D.E.S. Grounds, located at 735 Main Street, Half Moon Bay, California. To learn more about the event visit here.

Coastside residents who travel through El Granada in October should also be aware that you may encounter various construction spots as various projects are slated to happen.  The Surfer's Beach Project is set to begin in the coming weeks, and should be wrapped up by November or December depending on the weather. The project is intended to help prevent the erosion process that would eventually compromise Highway 1. In order to accomplish this, a rock slope will be installed along a 175 foot section of current eroding bluff. It has been estimated that since the 1959 Pillar Point Harbor outer breakwater construction nearly 65 feet of shoreline has eroded. There will also be a 400-foot section of trail created that will connect to the California Coastal Trail, and a set of stairs will be added for easier beach access.

Latest news on Linda Mar intersection

by Kathy and Michael Rain - The Rain Team

At the intersection of Linda Mar Boulevard and Route 1, asphalt grinding and paving will take place. This will affect signal timing for the entire week. Electrical work that controls the Route 1 and Linda Mar intersection will be worked on during the week of September 14 and original signal timing will be restored by mid-week of September 14.

North and southbound temporary striping will be removed and replaced with permanent striping the following week beginning Monday, September 14 and completed by Thursday, September 17, between the hours of 7:00 PM to 6:00 AM.

Final paving will restore lanes both north and south of the bridge back to the original configurations. The area between the bridge and Linda Mar Boulevard will have two lanes starting closer to the bridge.

Final construction for this project will be completed by October, 2015. This work is part of the San Pedro Creek Bridge Replacement Project that started construction in May 2014. The project will install a longer and higher bridge over the creek to provide capacity for the 100-year flood event. In addition, a Class 1 multi-purpose path will be added along its eastern side.

NOTE: Residents may notice increased noise from grinding/paving equipment and mandatory backup alarms while the contractor is working in the construction zone.
